Assistance to prisoners abroad

The Court of Audit has investigated the assistance provided by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Justice to Dutch nationals held in foreign prisons. Many improvements have been made in recent years. The Court recommends, though, that clearer information should be provided on the frequency of visits and the €30 given to prisoners outside Europe each month should be indexed. The high proportion of prisoners held for drugs-related offences (80%) should be audited in greater detail, according to the Court.
