Limited insight into the volume and value of state property

Ministry of Finance announces Compact Civil Service initiatives

The government has only limited insight into the volume of land, water, buildings and infrastructure the state of the Netherlands owns. The Court of Audit also found that the property is not valued on a uniform basis and that the government does not carry out periodic reviews to determine whether it needs the property. The government is therefore missing opportunities to save money and does not know whether surplus property is offered for sale on a timely basis. In the years 2007-2009, the state entered into 1,100 transactions to sell property worth €574 million. According to the Land Registry, the state owns more than 37% of all property in the Netherlands.
