The Council of Finance Ministers of the EU member states meeting on Wednesday 17 November 2010 approved the appointment of Gijs de Vries as member of the European Court of Auditors. The appointment will take effect on 1 January 2011. Mr de Vries is currently a member of the Netherlands Court of Audit.
The European Parliament had approved the Netherlands' nomination of Gijs M. de Vries (54) as a member of the European Court of Auditors on 7 October 2010. The Dutch Council of Ministers had nominated him on 2 July 2010. Mr de Vries has been a member of the Court of Audit since October 2008, before which he was State Secretary for the Interior and Kingdom Relations and Chair of the Liberal and Democratic Group in the European parliament.
The European Court of Auditors is an institution of the European
Union. Located in Luxembourg, it is responsible for auditing the
EU's finances. Every EU member state appoints one member to the
European Court of Auditors. The current Dutch member, M.B.
(Maarten) Engwirda, will retire on 31 December 2010, when he will
have been a member of the European Court of Auditors for 15 years.
